Second Deliverable Report of AGROSHIELD Project is Approved by CLIMAAX
AGROSHIELD Project, supported through the Second Open Call of the CLIMAAX Project funded under the European Union's Horizon Europe Programme, is carrying out work to assess the current and future impacts of agricultural drought in the Southern Marmara Basin and to develop locally applicable adaptation strategies. In the second phase of the project, agricultural drought risk analyses conducted in İznik, Gemlik, Karamürsel and Gönen were further developed using up-to-date local data obtained from relevant public institutions, enabling a more detailed assessment of drought risks across different farming systems.
The second phase focused on:
- Deepening the analysis of the current and future impacts of drought,
- Spatially assessing agricultural drought risks across the four pilot districts and developing 60 risk maps,
- Assessing the potential impacts of drought on agricultural production and the local economy,
- Identifying local priorities by assessing differences in risk levels and adaptive capacity across the pilot districts.
The analyses indicate that agricultural drought is expected to become more frequent in the future due to the impacts of climate change. They also demonstrate that drought risk depends not only on the severity of the hazard but also on the adaptive capacity of regions and agricultural sectors. According to the assessment, approximately TRY 1.57 billion in agricultural revenue could be at risk by the end of the century.
With the approval of the second-phase report, the project has entered its third phase, which will focus on jointly assessing the findings with local stakeholders and translating them into applicable adaptation strategies. As part of this phase, Community Adaptation Action Plans (CAAPs) will be developed in each pilot area in collaboration with farmers, cooperatives and local authorities.
