Ahmet Akın
President of Marmara Municipalities Union
Ahmet Akın, Mayor of Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality, was elected as the 18th President of the Marmara Municipalities Union (MMU) during the 2026 1st Ordinary Assembly Meeting held in Istanbul on April 29, 2026.
Biography
Ahmet Akın has developed his academic and professional career in the fields of energy, political science, and international relations. He studied English in the United Kingdom and pursued political science at Bahçeşehir University. Following his graduation from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Beykent University, he completed his master’s degree in Political Science and International Relations at Selçuk University. He has specialized in “Renewable Energy Resources and Production” particularly in Spain and other countries.
In his professional career, he has held senior executive positions such as General Manager, CEO, and Member of the Board in national and international organizations operating in the energy sector. He has combined his expertise in Türkiye’s energy supply security and environmentally sustainable energy policies with his strategic management experience in the private sector.
Akın served as a Member of Parliament in the 25th, 26th, and 27th terms of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye (GNAT), Akın has taken active roles in the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the State Economic Enterprises (SEE) Committee, and the Committee on industry, trade, energy, natural resources, information and technology, contributing to public administration, oversight, and technology policy processes, while also undertaking strategic responsibilities in strengthening local governments and developing infrastructure projects.
He is also the President of the Union of Oil Wrestling Organized Cities, Vice President of the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye (TMU), and Deputy President of the UCLG World Organization. Ahmet Akın is proficient in English and Spanish.
