EU4 Energy Transition: Covenant of Mayors in the Western Balkans and Turkey

The action will tackle climate change and support the energy transition in the Western Balkans and Turkey through an increased uptake of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy Initiative (CoM) in the region and support municipal authorities to translate their ambitions to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions into reality and enhance resilience to climate change impacts, while taking into account diversity on the ground.

Municipal authorities in the Western Balkans and Turkey will share a vision for making cities decarbonised and resilient, where citizens have access to secure, sustainable and affordable energy and are prepared against the impacts of climate change. They will pledge to reduce CO2 emissions by a share to be determined, equaling the level of ambition agreed at EU level (40% by 2030, and beyond, in line with the EU's ambitious targets) and to increase their resilience to the impacts of climate change. This vision will build on the synergies between clean energy transition, GHG emission reductions and cleaner air in the urban context.
