Observed annually on June 8 as part of Türkiye Environment Week, Marmara Sea Day brings together events along all coastlines of Marmara Sea to raise public awareness about the challenges facing this vital body of water. Marmara Municipalities Union coordinates a wide range of awareness activities in collaboration with municipalities and civil society organizations.
Marmara Sea Day unites municipalities across Marmara Region alongside civil society organizations, universities, the private sector, and citizens of all ages. Observed under a different theme each year, past editions have centered on microplastics, marine litter, biodiversity, and seafaring. Every activity contributes to the protection of Marmara Sea and to building greater public awareness about its future.

The Letter That Changed the Fate of Marmara
Ahmet Enön: “In 1973, we immediately took action. In August 1973, we sent letters to all municipalities bordering Marmara Sea and the Gulf, requesting them to convene. This was the first step of what would go down in history as Marmara Municipalities Union, the first regional union of municipalities in Turkiye”
The Establishment of Marmara Municipalities Union
Marmara Municipalities Union, which played a pioneering role in the development of Turkiye’s democratic local government movement, the strengthening of municipalities’ authority and resources, the promotion of environmental awareness in local governance, and the adoption of sustainable urban development approaches, as well as fostering cooperative solutions to municipalities’ shared problems, was established on 25 April 1975.
Marmara Sea Action Plan Announced
Within the scope of 22-item Marmara Sea Action Plan, Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change prepared Marmara Sea Integrated Strategic Plan through a multi-stakeholder approach. The plan emphasizes the importance of public awareness in the protection of Marmara Sea. Therefore, it has been decided that events focusing on public awareness specific to Marmara Sea will be organized every year on June 8 as part of the plan.
Marmara Sea Day was Celebrated for the First Time.
Due to the anniversary of the world’s largest marine mobilization, a unified campaign was carried out across Marmara Region on June 8 under the slogans #MarmaraHepimizin and #BirlikteTemizTutalım, emphasizing unity and solidarity. As part of Türkiye Environment Week, which begins with World Environment Day on June 5, a total of 62 simultaneous awareness events were organized on June 8, Marmara Sea Day, across 5 metropolitan municipalities and 2 provincial municipalities located along the sea coast.
Marmara Sea Day in 2023
Under the coordination of Marmara Municipalities Union, more than 100 activities were organized, including diving operations, seabed and shoreline clean-ups, waste exhibitions, research expeditions, seaplane demonstrations, ghost net removal, planting of saltwater-resistant aromatic plants, and tin boat floating events.
Was Enthusiastically Celebrated
Citizens of all ages came together in 129 different events, united for Marmara Sea, and demonstrated their love for the sea.
On Marmara Sea Day, all stakeholders gathered along the coasts.
The events, held for the fourth time within scope of Marmara Sea Day, were organized simultaneously on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, across seven provinces bordering Marmara Sea, with great enthusiasm and broad participation. Under the theme “Ecosystem Restoration,” thousands of people gathered along the coasts to support the protection and sustainability of Marmara Sea.

Since its inception in 2022, Marmara Sea Day has focused on a unique theme each year. Following previous years’ focus on microplastics, marine litter, biodiversity, and ecosystem restoration, the 2026 theme is: “Marine Water Temperature”.
