Marmara Municipalities Union Joins the Global Urban Observatory Network

With this membership, Marmara Municipalities Union (MMU) aims to both strengthen its institutional data capacity and contribute to international knowledge Exchange.

Marmara Municipalities Union (MMU) has joined the Global Urban Observatory Network (GUO-Net), a network established by UN-Habitat to support the production of reliable urban data and promote evidence-based urban governance. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, GUO-Net coordinates the activities of 374 urban observatories from around the world.

GUO-Net aims to strengthen data capacity at local, national, and regional levels, while also fostering the exchange of knowledge and experience between cities. In addition, the network supports the local implementation of global agendas such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, and the New Urban Agenda.

The objectives of the network can be summarized as follows:

  • Enhancing cities' capacity in data management and analysis to support stronger urban policies
  • Improving processes for collecting, managing, analyzing, and using urban data to support effective city planning
  • Strengthening information flow at local, national, and global levels to encourage better decision-making
  • Supporting inclusive consultation processes to help cities identify and integrate their data and knowledge needs
  • Providing all stakeholders with reliable data and analysis to encourage more active participation
  • Leveraging modern information and communication technologies (ICT) to boost the exchange of knowledge, expertise, and experience
  • Creating a global knowledge-sharing network to contribute to the implementation of the New Urban Agenda

Members of GUO-Net include not only municipalities, but also research centers, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and professional networks.
