Europe’s Largest Event For Sustainable Cities Held inOslo

Europe’s largest event for and about sustainable cities – the URBAN FUTURE Global Conference (UFGC) –gathered more than 2,500 participants consisting of professionals from cities and municipalities, businesses, research, innovation and science real estate, national and regional government, architecture and urban planning, NGO’s and start ups in Oslo, the European Green Capital 2019. The event is coorganized by FutureBuilt, an innovative project that supports climate-friendly urban development in the Oslo region.

The conference was founded in 2014 and is taking place in a different European city every year from 2018 onwards. Since 2014, visitor numbers have tripled. The conference is one of the main events in Oslo’s European environmental capital programme. This year the conference teamed up with more than 100 partners including the Covenant of Mayors, C40, EUROCITIES.

The thematic areas are changing slightly from year to year and this year’s thematic focus was on urban mobility, built environment & architecture, leadership green and business & innovation.

Vice Mayor for Sustainability, Clean Air and Energy Transition of the City of Rotterdam, Arno Bonte, Mayor of the City of Reykjavik Dagur B. Eggertsson, Mayor of the City of Stockholm, Anna König Jerlmyr, Deputy Mayor for Urban Planning, Green Areas and Agriculture of the City of Milan, Pierfrancesco Maran, Lord Mayor of the City of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen, Mayor of Technical and Environmental Affairs at the City of Copenhagen, Ninna Hedeager Olsen, and Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj were among the speakers.

As Vice Mayor for Urban Development in Oslo and Co-host of UFGC19 Hanna E. Marcussen said that “Cities account for more than 75 % of all climate gas emissions. That’s why it really matters how we develop our cities! A greener city is a better city. For everyone. In Oslo we have ambitious goals – we don’t just want to be a great place to live and grow up, we want to be one of the best cities for the world. Now I am really looking forward to learning more from other cities and others cities can learn something from you.”

On behalf of Marmara Municipalities Union (MMU), MMU Secretary General Mr. M. Cemil Arslan, MMU International Cooperation Coordinator Burcuhan Sener, MMU Urban Planning Coordinator Ezgi Kucuk, and MMU Corporate Communications Coordinator attended the conference.

The event will be held in Lizbon in 2020 and in Rotterdam in 2021.
