EU funded "Sustainable Mobility" project launched in Gaziantep
A project aiming at promoting environment-friendly mobility policies in Jordanian and Syrian cities and funded under EU's Cooperation in Urban Development and Dialogue (CIUDAD) programme will be soon implemented by consortium of Turkish, French and German partners. The Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning Adapted to Mediterranean (SUMPA-MED) project, submitted by Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality, in South-East Turkey, brings together the Union of Municipalities of Marmara Region, with İstanbul as leading member, and cities like Paris, Stuttgart, Amman, İrbid and Aleppo. The project is supported by a number of central governments bodies, such as Jordanian Ministry of Municipal Affairs (MoMA), Turkish Ministry of Environment & Forestry, French Environment and Energy Agency (ADEME), and Arab Urban Development Institute (AUDI) and the Grand Lyon Municipality.
Following the selection procedure by the European Commission, the project has been approved and official ceremony of signing the contract was held in Gaziantep. The Union of Municipalities of Marmara, which has actively contributed to the development of the project, was represented by Mr Recep Bozlagan, Secretary General, and Murat Daoudov, Director of EU and International Relations.
The project's overall objectives are to transfer and adapt planning tools and measurement methodologies to Aleppo (Syria), Amman and Irbid (Jordan) cities in order to reduce the overall environmental impacts of the growing demand for mobility by promoting intermodal integration and increasing the mode shares of environmentally friendly transportation modes. The project will be implemented during 3 years.
