Istanbul and Bangkok Become Sister Cities
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and Bangkok City of Thailand signed on 8 July 2009 their Sister City Protocol. During the ceremony in Istanbul, Mayor Kadir Topbaž of Istanbul and Bangkok Metropolitan Council President Kitpon Cherdchookitkul stressed that they aim to increase cooperation in the field of municipal services, economy and tourism.
Mayor Topbaž declared to the press that Istanbul is sister city with 30 cities, has signed cooperation agreements with 20 cities and friendship agreements with some 6 cities. Bangkok becomes the 31st sister city of Istanbul. Mayor Kadir Topbaž highlighted that good relations of local governments lay foundations for better diplomacy between countries.
Expressing his pleasure of being in Turkey, President of Bangkok Metropolitan Council Mr Kitpon Cherdchookitkul thanked for Turkish hospitality. Mr Cherdchookitkul also declared that they are proud of 52 years of good relations between Thailand and Turkey. Mr Cherdchookitkul stressed the common features of Istanbul and Bangkok in the field of cultural and historical heritage, trade and tourism.
